The roof of the house suddenly gave way in Uttar Pradesh state, trapping the residents, four of whom managed to escape from the rubble with the help of neighbours, a police officer said. “Thirteen people have been killed. Among the deceased are four labourers as well as the family and relatives of the house owner,” district police superintendent, Muniraj, who uses only one name, told AFP. “Our men along with those from the local unit of the National Disaster Response Force rushed to the spot for rescue operations,” he said. “The injured have been rushed to a hospital where they are being treated.” Police said they were searching for the building contractor after suspecting poor construction was to blame for the accident in Dulhaipur village about 32 kilometres from the city of Varanasi. A local official said 20,000 Indian rupees would be given to the relatives of the victims as compensation for the accident. The accident is the latest in a long line of deadly building collapses in India, some of which have highlighted shoddy construction standards. A massive influx of people to cities in search of jobs and a shortage of low-cost housing has helped fuel the construction of illegal buildings across the country, often made using substandard material. Millions also live in dilapidated old buildings, many of which cave in during rains. In July, an under construction 11-storey apartment tower in Tamil Nadu’s state capital Chennai came crashing down following heavy rains, killing 61 people, mostly labourers. A rundown residential block in Mumbai collapsed, killing 60 people, in September 2013.

Reworkings and mashups of classic fables have become increasingly popular in the last few years, generating a number of books, television series and films. That might be one of the reasons why Into the Woods’ film adaptation does not feel quite as impressive as it probably should. Inspired by the Grimm Brothers’ fairy tales, the fantasy crossover film combines some familiar stories. A vengeful witch (Meryl Streep) offers to lift a curse she placed on the family tree of a childless baker (James Corden) and his wife (Emily Blunt), if they can procure four items for her: a cow as white as milk, a cape as red as blood, hair as yellow as corn and a slipper as pure as gold. The couple’s quest leads them into the woods, where they cross paths with Cinderella (Anna Kendrick), Rapunzel (MacKenzie Mauzy), Little Red Riding Hood (Lilla Crawford) and Jack (Daniel Huttlestone) from Jack and the Beanstalk. But just when things seem to be going as expected, the film takes a darker turn and strips the stories of their happily-ever-after ending. While musicals abound in the enchanted land of fairy tales, Into the Woods tries to set itself apart in the second act with its bleak take on relationships, riddled with deception and regret. But things get so convoluted that it’s easy to lose interest in the proceedings. The film becomes more of a drag than an exploration of the complexity of morality. The overlong running time doesn’t help and neither does the fact that the speak-sung music numbers — although clearly very competently put together — aren’t exactly catchy or instantly memorable. <img alt="http://i1.tribune.com.pk/wp-content/uploads/2015/02/moive.jpg" src="http://i1.tribune.com.pk/wp-content/uploads/2015/02/moive.jpg" /> The acting, however, is very impressive. Each role is perfectly cast and everyone from Streep and Blunt to Chris Pine and Billy Magnussen (who play Cinderella and Rapunzel’s respective princes) delivers strong performances. The duet ‘Agony’ is perhaps the film’s musical highlight and is in stark contrast to Johnny Depp’s glorified cameo as the Big Bad Wolf which is still uncomfortably creepy. Despite not being very inventive, Into the Woods is visually impressive but its execution is not as seamless as it could have been. The developments seem more haphazard than elegant and the humour is often not effective. Movie review: American Sniper – a missed strike

<a href="http://tribune.com.pk/story/836600/movie-review-american-sniper-a-missed-strike/"> 				<img alt="" height="120" src="http://i1.tribune.com.pk/wp-content/uploads/2015/02/836600-americansniperbradleycooper-1423666450-509-160x120.jpg" width="160" /> 			</a> 			If you were living under a rock for the last 15 years and had never heard of weapons of mass destruction, al Qaeda, Bush or Saddam, American Sniper, Clint Eastwood’s latest — and most disappointing — offering, would leave you with the same question you started out with: Why was America fighting a war in Iraq? But this is a question the movie doesn’t really try to answer. Every time the eponymous sniper Chris Kyle (played by a beefy Bradley Cooper) is asked this question, his answers are evasive. He’s doing it for the kids, or his wife, or his country. Or maybe not — it was difficult to understand what Kyle was saying given all the grunting and mumbling. For a movie that makes much of the burdensome balance soldiers have to strike between the madness of war abroad and the banality of kids’ parties and maintenance stores at home, Kyle (based on an actual war veteran) is a remarkably uncomplicated character. He shoots bad guys. He loves America. And beer. And his wife, who’s interesting in the first five minutes of conversation, but then duly devolves into a crying mess as soon as she gets married and her husband goes off to kill the ‘savages’ (the term Kyle actually used to describe Iraqis in his autobiography, which the movie is based on). Despite being primarily shot in what is meant to be Iraq (the film was shot mostly in California and Morocco), there are very few Iraqis in this movie, and even fewer Iraqis who speak. Eastwood spends most of his time making sure the ‘savages’ live up to their name. For instance, there’s a scene in which a terrorist known as ‘the Butcher’ takes a power drill to a child’s temple as punishment for his family talking to Americans. There’s another duplicitous character who invites Americans to dine with him for Eid while he’s hidden a stash of grenades and guns under the floorboards. Of course, there’s no mention of Americans gratuitously torturing Iraqis, the horrors of Abu Ghraib or American airstrikes that killed hundreds of Iraqis at a time. Most importantly, there is no attempt to address why Kyle and the rest of the soldiers were there in the first place and what they sought to accomplish in Iraq. Instead, you get the good guys — Kyle and his compatriots — and the bad guys — Iraqis or Syrians (we’re not sure because they’re all the same as far as the movie is concerned). In any other movie, one would imagine the narrative’s conflict arises from Kyle questioning the morality of his actions, or a higher purpose, something to do with the Bible he carries, but never reads. But no, Kyle is worn down by terrorists — and one al Qaeda sniper in particular — that he hasn’t killed (with more than 160 confirmed kills, Kyle already had plenty) and who may be harassing his buddies, but not his conscience. My political misgivings aside, Eastwood is a gifted film-maker. Scenes of Kyle driving in the Humvee with other soldiers, having lunch, or visiting comrades in the hospital are touching. The constant gunfire ringing in Kyle’s ears when he’s stateside, rang in mine as well. Post-traumatic stress order is not exactly a new subject matter in Hollywood, but Eastwood portrayed it better than his contemporaries (Brothers, a 2009 flick that starred Tobey Maguire as the damaged veteran, comes to mind). Still, film-making credits only serve to polish this fairly blunt instrument of propaganda. Unwittingly, this movie best shows how the Bush administration saw the world — with a moral certitude it did not have, and a selective blindness that only solidified that certitude. <img alt="" src="http://i1.tribune.com.pk/wp-content/uploads/2015/02/star02.jpg" /> Published in The Express Tribune, Sunday Magazine, February 15th, 2015.

Female corporate powerhouses: In the corridors of power

Slightly more than 10% of the 1,645 billionaires in the world are women. And there are currently only 22 countries that have women as their head of state. At a glance, power still seems a disproportionately male domain. But time and again, there are trailblazers who crack that code. They see opportunity where others see a disadvantage. They learn to maneuver a world that seems skewed towards serving those already at the top. Armed with their vision, ambition and persistence, they create paths where there were none. Driving this point home are some of Pakistan’s prominent female executives who have overcome multiple impediments to excel in their field and stand as reminders of what one can achieve if they put their mind to it. Jehan Ara, responsible for developing the P@SHA brand, is a force to reckon with in the male-dominated field of Information Technology. With almost 30 years of experience in marketing, communication and interactive media in Hong Kong, the Far East, United Arab Emirates and Pakistan, she has built an impressive portfolio and remains mostly unchallenged in the field. Ara completed a Bachelor’s degree in arts from St Joseph’s College for Women and immediately entered the workforce. Today, she is an entrepreneur, a motivator, a social activist and a strong proponent of extending the power and use of information and communication technologies to empower and enable communities. Once, in the absence of the group managing director once, a potential Japanese customer who came to our office in Hong Kong refused to have a business discussion with me because I was a woman. While I was happily practicing psychiatry, many opportunities came my way that tempted me to accept greater leadership and administrative roles in the healthcare industry in the United States but I decided to come back and contribute to my country. 5. What brings out the competitive streak in you? Any challenge which appears impossible will always excite me and urge me to take it head-on. 6. What is your least favourite thing about humanity? As humans we’ve been given the gift of wisdom, which will only deepen with continued learning. It really upsets me when I see complacent people. She has always pushed the boundaries and made it her life’s mission to eradicate male chauvinism with her extensive body of work. In July 2005, Khalid, who holds a Bachelor’s degree in business strategy from the University of Wollongong, Australia, and an MBA in human resources from the Institute of Business Management, Karachi, began her career as a business partner for consumer banking at ABN-AMRO bank. In May 2006, she joined Shell Pakistan as a recruitment and learning advisor, looking after their summer internship and graduate programmes along with vacancy-driven recruitment. Maybe not explicitly, but perhaps as unconscious bias in the workplace I have. At the onset of joining a company, I was advised by a female colleague that she had overheard male colleagues declaring that a woman in my role could not handle the job. I was, of course, indignant and so a few of us ladies decided to change their minds. We simply stood our ground when we were being addressed by more aggressive colleagues and this eventually resulted in meetings becoming more balanced. 7.
